New Question Regarding Wireless: Kindle with 3G network & computers involved?

Is there a way I can turn the 3G network on the kindle into an access point so I can get on the internet with computers or an ipod touch in the same house. (There will be no wireless internet, only dial up) so I am wondering if I can somehow use the 3G network on the kindle to “give” the internet (so to speak) to my other devices.

Thanks!
-Wannabe Techie

I’m not sure what or who provides service for a “Kindle.” If this device is what I think it is, it’s a phone for social networking and is available on Verizon Wireless.

To answer your question, it depends on your phone and whether such a function or feature is built into the phone. On some of the higher end wireless phones, a function specifically for what you are wanting to do does exist on the phone. I know for a Blackberry Storm, it has a function within the phone to do this. The best solution would be to contact your wireless provider and explain to them what your objective is.

Additional insight… If the function does exist on your phone where you can CONNECT a USB CORD to YOUR PHONE and the other end TO A COMPUTER, if you are inexperienced in networking, it could become a little tricky. So that all your wireless devices/PC’s/Laptops could access the Internet through your phone, you would need a wireless router if you have wireless devices, or non wireless router if you have no wireless devices. On the computer your cellphone is connected to, provided you are using a Windows OS, you would need to engaged ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Your PC with the phone connected to it via USB, would then need to be connected to the router either wirelessly or with an ethernet cord which would allow all devices that can make a connection to the router, access to the Internet through the computer you have ICS enabled and then your cellphone. That sounds easy, ICS ON, connect to a wireless/non wireless router, and then everything else connects to the wireless/non wireless router. If you do this, please know that the computer you have your cellphone plugged into with ICS on, with ICS on the PC will act like a small DHCP server. Your wireless/non wireless router MAY also act as a DHCP server. This isn’t impossible, but when it comes to configuration and you can’t get it to work… keep in mind you MAY be dealing with to DHCP servers.

The last thing I wanted to mention to you, is that I’ve yet to hear of a wireless carrier who enables their customers to use their 3G connection with any other device other then their phone. In other words, even if you wanted to hook only one computer up to your cellphone and connect that computer to the Internet using your cellphones 3G connection, I haven’t heard of a wireless carrier who will allow this again, using the “3G.” I have Verizon and is the reason I keep referencing Verizon; they have an “additional” data plan for $30.00 dollars a month for exactly what you are wanting to do (providing your phone can act as an Internet connection for devices other then the phone itself). So, you would be paying normal service for your basic cellphone service, you would be paying $X amount of dollars for your data plan for your phone, and through Verizon, you would pay $30.00 extra dollars so that you could have a data plan for other devices other then your cellphone.

You did not indicate what all you wanted to connect into your network to have Internet access through your cellphone. For retrieving webpages, small files, things like that, one or two devices will most likely work fine. If you are going to be downloading larger files, running Xbox, PS3, and things like that, using your phone as an Internet connection for these devices, you will be sadly disappointed. Your 3G will not be able to keep up with streaming video, online video games, etc.

Something you may want to look into, I suppose you have access to some type of “apps” download. Using your wireless phone, search through your “App World” and look for a program called “PDA.net”. It installs on your phone and, provides you with a URL to download a small program to install on your computer. PDA.net enables you to use your 3G connection for other devices. Using it on one computer and retrieving pages, saved me one night the Internet was out all night through my ISP. HOWEVER, again using Verizon, Verizon’s TOS indicates that using your “3G connection for other then your handheld wireless device (cellphone) is a violation of their TOS, your services through Verizon could be terminated immediately, and all monies you owe, including future, you would be liable for. If Verizon is your carrier, call and ask them. Otherwise, call and ask your wireless provider their limitations of usage with their 3G connection.

Either way, data plan on your phone, PDA.net… I think you will probably be disappointed on the end results with having your cellphone used as an access point for Internet capable devices in your home. If you are unable to have DSL or Cable, you may look into an Internet connection using Satellite. It may be a little more pricy then DSL or Cable, but when it comes to using any Internet ready device in your home, you’ll be happy that you have it.

Good luck.
