Finding the best e-Book Reader

Sometimes, all you want to do is read. Some do it because they absolutely have to; and some read for the sheer pleasure of it. While reading as a hobby has been around since the beginnings of civilization, it has only been until this last few years that ebook readers were launched in the market to provide readers, hardcore or non-hardcore, an option to ‘carry’ a whole lot of books without having to really lug around a load of books. If you are currently engaged in the act of finding the best ebook reader; here are five tips that just might help you out.

1. Consider Your Reading Habits

Some ebook reader shoppers just stare at a whole list of product features and specifications, not giving a thought to how they actually read. Finding the best ebook reader involves more than just a comparison of stats. You have to know if your choice would actually complement your lifestyle or reading habits. For example, if you are fond of hitting the beach or camping out, you might need an ebook reader with excellent battery time. Note that while ebook readers typically use e-ink technology to greatly reduce glare, there are tablet PCs such as the iPad that make good ebook readers as well, but only if you can put up with the glare, thanks to its LCD screen. E-ink means that you get to read with the least toll on your eyes, but you can’t read at night or in dark places unless you purchase clip-on lights or ebook reader cases with backlights.

2. Connectivity Concerns

If you want to be able to download ebooks straight to your ebook reader (as opposed to downloading files with your computer and getting them transferred to the reader). Most entry-level brands come with wireless connectivity and high end ones usually come with 3G connectivity as well. Note that 3G connectivity costs around $50 for Kindle and Nook.

3. When Size Matters

Ebook readers come in various sizes although the standard size is usually around 6 inches (in length, at least). Weight is also usually around 10-11 ounces. Larger displays usually has more weight; making the device more difficult to carry along. However, there are some file formats such as PDF, which works well with ebook readers with larger displays, such as the Amazon DX.

4. Device Support

Do you want or need to be connected to other devices? There are ebook readers such as the B & N Nook and the Amazon Kindle that allows connectivity to other devices. It means you can easily transfer your files to other devices such as iPads and Android Phones.

5. Price Check

Most people also make the mistake of taking a look at the price as a measuring stick of starts. While it is true that you can get a relatively inexpensive ebook reader, you might want to learn about the features that you can get at a few dollars more. Comparison shopping sites should be able to help you at finding the best ebook reader that can give you more bang for your buck.

Finding the best ebook reader is by no means rocket science, not even for those new to 10-ounce multimedia gadgets. With a bit of research and comparison shopping, you can easily pick the one that would suit you best.
