The Lookbook eReader by Shift3

The Lookbook is an e-book reader released by Shift3. Of interest is that despite the cheaper price tag, it still looks quite stylish and has some unexpected features for a device in this price range.

The unit has support for a number of formats, including standard plain text, ePub and PDFs. It also supports some lesser-known, more exotic formats.

The Lookbook is very compact having dimensions of 9″x5″x0.5″. The unit also comes bundled with a free leather carry case; perfect for carrying the device in a handbag or backpack.

The device has an incredible 7-inch full-colour display with adjustable brightness. The contrast of the screen is excellent making the device very easy to use in high or low light conditions.

It also comes with an internal rechargeable battery, which is built-in to the unit. It lasts for 6 hours of reading time (according to the manual), although there have been reports of this being rather optimistic (5 hours is more like it).

A great feature of the device is its’ support for the Kobo network. This is what it uses to download books. The Kobo library is incredibly extensive with a collection of over 2 million titles. With this many books there’s no chance of running out! The device comes with 250 free e-ooks.

The Lookbook has a built in Wi-Fi feature. This makes downloading books a breeze just connect the device to a local network source then visit the Kobo network & download book(s) as required. Simple, easy and pain-free.

The unit comes equipped with 512MB of built-in storage space which can be extended using a memory card. This extends the maximum storage space up to 8GB. With the standard e-book being less that 1MB this is more than enough to keep even the most dedicated reader occupied.

The usability of the device is definitely a stand-out feature. It has two navigation buttons on either side for paging backwards and forwards through titles. It also has a great book-marking feature, whereby the last page viewed in a book is stored in memory so that next time you open the same book, you’re instantly returned to the precise page you left off.

Out of the box the unit comes with everything you need to get up and going. A USB cable, designer case and power adapter are included. There’s no need for additional accessories here.

To conclude: the Shift3 Lookbook is an excellent entry point into the e-reader market. It comes with 250 free books to get you reading as soon as possible, and the usability and aesthetic appearance of the device cannot be beaten.  With support for a wide range of formats and the backing of the Kobo network, there is no concern that you will run out of books to read!
